Binti Photo Gallery: Africa, India & the UK

Starting Binti’s journey. First stop: Nairobi.

We arrive in a remote village in Nairobi, Kenya.

We interviewed many girls in the village. This girl was the youngest.

“I want to be a teacher.”

“I was told to stop playing with boys.”

At least 2.6 million schoolgirls in Kenya lack access to affordable and hygienic sanitary towels, according to UNESCO.

“Please bring your Binti project to our village so that we can have jobs and improve our lives.”

Next stop: Punjab, India.

Approximately 70% of all reproductive diseases in India are caused by poor menstrual hygiene; it can also affect maternal mortality.

Many women do not touch their crops while menstruating because they believe they will be spoiled.

Because there are no rubbish bins available, most items are either buried, or even burned—including sanitary rags—in the stove used for cooking, like the one shown here.

We interviewed girls at two different schools, the majority of whom did not understand what menstruation was (it is not explained to them), they just know they need to use a rag.

Because of the shame associated with menstruation, washed rags are often hidden under a mattress, so they're never sterilised in the sun.

Through education, Binti intends to smash the shame of menstruation and empower the next generation.

Binti CEO Manjit Gill meets with Arunachalam Muruganantham, “The Menstruation Man.” Sanitary napkins produced in a “Small is Beautiful” model can deliver livelihood, hygiene, and dignity to poor women, and help them strengthen society.

These units produce 200 packets of low-cost sanitary towels daily.

Dharavi Slum in Mumbai—the biggest slum in the world—is rife with shame around menstruation. The area chief claims the local girls use sanitary towels, but through interviewing the girls, we found this to be far from the truth.

This woman believes she is dirty during her menstrual cycle, and is not allowed in the kitchen or family area during that time.

At the HDFC Bank-sponsored health clinic in Pune, India, women were keen to discuss Binti’s initiative and empowering ideas.

When men leave, women are more open to talking about their menstruation issues.
